What does the host family expect of their au pair?
Usually an au pair in Germany is required to work up to 30 hours per week, usually
not more than 5 hours per day. If the au pair is being asked to work extra
hours, the host family is obliged to compensate her with proportionate leisure
time. The host parents may ask their au pair for additional baby-sitting up to 3
times per week. The host family will provide the au pair with a daily schedule
of their duties and time off. As the host family expects the au pair to be a
real help and support in managing their daily routine, flexibility is very
important.
What can au pairs expect from
their host families?
- Being accepted as
a family member for the duration of your stay,
and your own private room
- your host family invites you to take part in their daily life including all
meals.
- Pocket money - Au pairs

- Leisure time
and Paid Vacation-
as an au pair you will have 1.5 days off per week. At least once a month, the
free days must be on a weekend. If you stay for 1 year, you are entitled to 4
weeks of paid vacation (the entitlement decreasing proportionally with a
shorter stay).
- The possibility to
attend a language course
- your host parents will help you to find a suitable course that fits into
your daily schedule. You are expected to cover the costs of the course
yourself (as a rule, about 15-50 Euros per month).
- Monthly ticket for
public transportation
your host family will cover the costs of a monthly ticket for public
transport (local traffic) to enable you to attend courses, visit friends, and
take part in cultural activities. Your travel costs to and from Germany are
